The Mosley Review: Borat Subsequent Movie Film
14 years ago, America had a mirror held up to its face in a real and satirical comedy that changed the landscape in what could be done in a comedy. It instantly became a classic and one of the most quoted films of all time. It was offensive to many cultures, disgusting, brave and downright hilarious. I loved every bit of it and it is definitely one of the best comedies ever. Now comes the sequel and I had no idea what I was in for. I had the fear that the film would not live up to the hype or standard the original had set. I was genuinely surprised and happy to say that this film lives up to the original and is shockingly heart warming. Yes we get the political jabs, offensive humor and imagery, but you get also great father and daughter road trip film. The film answers the questions of how the world react to Borat walking down the street now, who would he go after in this political climate and what would he do during the current pandemic. It was a fun, hilarious and an outstanding adventure yet again for the character.
Sasha Baron Cohen returns as the iconic character Borat and he is even more loveable and outrageous. He retains the same charm and grace as he takes the character on an even more hilarious adventure. Borat goes through a change of heart and is actually challenged more when he meets his daughter. Maria Bakalova was fantastic and fun as his daughter Tutar. She goes along with Borat and just like him, she gets into some wild and outrageous situations. The both of them have great chemistry and throughout the film you see them form an excellent bond. It was abrasive, wrong and yet heartwarming. Like the previous film, real people and their real reactions are on display. The scene with Rudy Giuliani will go down in infamy.
The score by Sasha's younger brother Erran Baron Cohen, was fun and elevated some of the more emotional moments. I loved that the film didn't pull any punches and was a fun social commentary on the world today. I was surprised by how current it was with the pandemic and how quickly this film came together. If you loved the first film, this is a must watch. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Let me know what you thought of my review and if you liked the film in the comments below.
